In Cherry, The Race with USA Continues
Turkey, exporting yearly 35.000 tons of cherry has this year exported 54.000 tons of cherry and sour cherry and obtained an income of 134 million dollars. Thus, cherry has overthrown the citrus fruits, which, for many years, possessed the leadership in fruit exports. The second big struggle of the Turkish cherry is with the USA. That country was the largest cherry exporter in the world. Turkey has reached the ‘break-even’ point.   This year it is expected to surpass. If this happens, Turkey will become the largest cherry exporter in the world.

In the first seven months of this year while cherry and sour cherry came first in fresh fruit exports with the quantity of 54.000 tons and 134 million dollars, lemon, with exports income and amount having decreased by 14 percent   came second with the quantity of 149.000 tons and 68 million dollars income. Last years cherry and sour cherry exports of Turkey had been 35.000 tons.

According to the information given by Ali Kavak, the President of Mediterranean Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Exporters Association, the exports of fresh fruit and vegetables in the first seven months of this year has increased by 9 percent in quantity and 20 percent in value compared to last year. In the first seven moths of the year Turkey has exported one million 66.000 tons of fresh fruit and vegetables with a value of 638 million dollars.

We Can Surpass the USA
Yavuz Taner, the founder of the company Alara that is the largest cherry company of the EU, saying "Turkey will become the first in the world in cherry trade” explained as follows:
"The largest cherry exporter in the world is the USA. Turkey has caught up with the USA in cherry exports in the year 2004. That year both countries’ cherry exports became 41.000 tons.  In the year 2005 we hoped to surpass USA and to become first. But as our exports remained at 35.000 tons due to bad weather conditions we could not overtake USA.
This year we do not know yet the cherry exports figure of the USA. But our cherry exports have been 54.000 tons with a big increase. This year I think that Turkey has surpassed the USA and has become world’s first in cherry.  As the cherry production is rapidly increasing in our country, I am sure that we shall largely surpass the USA in the next few years."

1 Kilogram of Cherry Costs 12 YTL in Istanbul

The cherry exports have stopped.   Now the late season cherries from the plateaus of the Taurus Mountains are arriving.
